Last Days in Istanbul

We have been having a great time in Istanbul. We have gone back to the Blue Mosque, visited the mosaics that have been excavated under the mosque, and finally seen the underground water cisterns for the ancient city of Constantinople. Who knew they would be full of fish these days? It still amazes us that the ancients could channel water from over 30 different rivers, build aqueducts and bridges to allow it to flow properly… for thousands of years, yet modern plumbing seems to elude the entire Middle East.
Summer 2008

Well Noel and I are starting to plan our summer trip. This year we are planning to go back to Turkey and visit several areas we missed the first time we were there, like Cappadocia, Mount Nemrut, Sumela Monastery, and a few others. We also want to revisit some of the places we were the first time and catch up with friends we have there. From Turkey we are planning to travel the Greek Islands and then up the Adriatic coast to Innsbruck, Austria. We plan to stop off in Montenegro, Dubrovnik (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and Split (Croatia) along the way.
Last Day in San Jose

We´ve been busy – yesterday we went to the Gold and Jade museums, did a walking tour of the city and met several interesting characters. Today we hired a fantastic taxi driver named Jose to take us outside of the city to some sites that are not conveniently accessed by public transit, but are well worth seeing. We went to the Dokas Coffee plantation, Zoo Ave (a zoo that´s full of endangered or injured animals that are being rehabilitated before re-introduction to the wild), and a town famous for it´s arts and crafts called Sarchi where they make beautiful wood and leather furniture, and they´re famous for their painted ox carts – if you can be famous for that.

So… We suffered what appears to be the quintessential Ryan Air experience getting out of Austria. Granted, there were some increased airport security measures in place at the time we arrived in Stansted Airport, but that does not excuse the “we couldn’t give a crap about you” customer service that is Ryan Air’s policy (perhaps not in those words, but certainly in practice…) After our flight left Salzburg 20 minutes late, we arrived in Stansted and went through the usual passport control and baggage claim waits, then arrived at the check in counter for our next flight out approximately 4 minutes after they closed it for check in – this is still 55 minutes before our flight is due to take off.
Raining in Innsbruck

Hey!
The weather we were told to expect in Scotland did not catch up with us until we reached Innsbruck. It has been raining for 6 days straight, and we’re a little water logged, as we have been hiking every day regardless. We are very happy to have landed here at the same time as so many of our hiking friends…Isabelle, Eric, Pascalle, Vera, Patrick… we have yet to see Anne, Peter, Dean, Catherine and Petra, and of course we all are feeling the loss of Gordon this year.
