Packing List
We have used the following list of items as a guide for packing for our trips over the years. It has been modified from time to time to reflect changes in equipment we have, style of trip we are taking, and the length of the trip. This is by no means a exhaustive list and may or may not work for other travelers.
Clothing
- 1: Short sleeve shirt
- 1: Long sleeve shirt
- 1 pair: Light pair of socks
- 1 pair: Heavy wool pair of socks (for Hiking)
- 2 pair: Underwear
- 1 pair: Shorts and
- 1 pair: Long pants that have zip off legs or
- 2 pair: Long pants that have zip off legs
- 1: Medium weight polar fleece jacket or pull over
- 1: Rain pants
- 1: Rain jacket or poncho / wind breaker
- 1: Hat
- 2: Bandanas
- 1: Hiking boots
- 1: Sandals or light foot wear
- 1: Pajamas
- 1: Bathing suit
Medical (bring enough for your whole trip)
- 1: Travelers Medical Kit (depends on destination)
- 1: Sterile kit (Optional but recommended)
- Any: Prescription medication you will require (Note: leave the prescription info on the medication)
- 1: Anti malaria drugs (if required)
- 1: Prescription for Cipro or other strong antibiotic
- 1 pkg: Mole skin
- 1 pkg: Mole foam
- 1 pkg: Bandages
- 36 caplets: Anti-Diarrhea (Hydrochloride 2mg)
- 1 bottle: Tylenol Sinus
- 1 bottle: Advil
- 1 tube: Polysporin
- 1 bottle: Sun block (SPF 30 min)
- 1: Water Filter (if required)
Personal Information
- 1: Passport
- 1 – 2: Extra passport photos
- 1: Visas for the countries you are planning to visit
- 1: Travel Insurance
- 1: Medical Insurance (Note: If you can’t afford it you can’t afford to travel)
- 1: Hostel Pass (if required)
- 1: Student or Teacher ID Card (www.istc.org)
- 1: Immunization card (with up to date vaccinations)
- 3 copies: of the following, take one with you and leave 2 behind with family members;
- Passport,
- Travel ID Card (Teacher or Student),
- Driver License,
- OHIP Card,
- Plane and Train tickets

- 1: Alarm clock
- 1: Extra pair of prescription glasses

- 1: Knife multi-tool

- Batteries for Camera (May be next to impossible to find or very expensive.)
- 1: Cell phone
Money
- $100: Cash (local currency of the country you are starting in.)
- Money belt or pouch (The neck pouch is more comfortable and can store your passport and other important info.)
- 2: Checking account checks
- 1: Interact bank card that is Plus system compatible (The Plus banking system is found almost everywhere in the World.)
- $50 – $75: Budget per day amounts depending on how you travel.
Toiletries
- 1: Tooth brush
- 1: Tooth paste
- Shaving gear
- 1: Deodorant
- 1 bars: Soap for you
- 1: Soap for clothes
- 1: Roll of toilet paper
- 1: Large shamie for a towel
- 1: Wash cloth
- 1: Baby powder or Talc (bottle)
Camping
- 1: Sleeping bag (Summer weight) and/or
- 1: Sleeping sheets (recommended no matter what)
