Back in Glasgow

So… We suffered what appears to be the quintessential Ryan Air experience getting out of Austria. Granted, there were some increased airport security measures in place at the time we arrived in Stansted Airport, but that does not excuse the “we couldn’t give a crap about you” customer service that is Ryan Air’s policy (perhaps not in those words, but certainly in practice…) After our flight left Salzburg 20 minutes late, we arrived in Stansted and went through the usual passport control and baggage claim waits, then arrived at the check in counter for our next flight out approximately 4 minutes after they closed it for check in – this is still 55 minutes before our flight is due to take off.

We’ve been to the Lochaber Highland games, and climbed Ben Nevis – it’s been a great couple of days. We stayed at a fun hostel in Corpach (Smiddy’s Bunkhouse) where we made some new friends and enjoyed a lot of laughs.

Highland Games…

Hey!

We’re back in Fort William so we can go to the highland games tomorrow, and climb Ben Nevis the next day. I’m very excited that we are going to get to see the games – with any luck, George will be asked to take part in a clan tug-o-war where he can put all of that keyboarding muscle to good use. (Noel is so dead… Geo typed that) I’ll probably get hit by a caber while laughing at him.

Finishing Yesterday’s Entry…

The marathon entry continues…

From Kircudbright to Wigtown: Wigtown falsely advertises itself as the literary capital of Scotland because it has so many bookshops. It could more accurately describe itself as the second-hand book store capital of Scotland, and when you visit you are under the distinct impression that the books in all of the stores simply continually recycle themselves from store to store within the same market square. A bit of a disappointment really, however; we did go down to the Martyr’s stake where two female covenanter’s were executed by means of drowning as they were tied to the stake in the firth at low tide, and the rising waters of high tide drowned them. Rather cruel and unusual punishment for insisting that God (not the king) was head of your church. It was interesting to see that the stake is currently in the middle of some marshy grazing land – it goes to show how much the waters have receded in the past 400+ years, as the two women were drowned in the 1600′s.

Back in Glasgow…

It has been so long since we’ve updated the blog properly that I’m going to have to resort to point form synopses of the places we’ve been and the things we’ve seen, so here it goes:
