Hiking In Innsbruck

Hey!
We’ve been having a great time hiking in the Alps for the last few days. It poured rain for the first two days we were here, but we went hiking anyways – it turned out well, as we met some great new people and renewed some friendships with some other summer hike regulars.

We have just finished our first hike. It was a rainy day hike in the mountains around Innsbruck. The hike was wet but over all was very good. The guide took us about 20 mins west of Innsbruck and we walked back to town, got back around 2:00pm.

Rainy Day Hike

We woke up to some much needed rain this morning – it has been so hot here that the glacial melt water that normally flows down the mountain sides in quaint little streams have looked like so many broken water mains spraying melt water into the air. Luckily, the hike program still runs on rainy days, and only the die-hards come out, so we get to do fun stuff.

Navis Valley

Another great hike today, led by Heinz up the Navis Valley on a route we haven’t done for 3 years. It was beautiful – it took us up through old growth forest in a national park (steep elements) for the first part. We emerged in farm land above the tree line where there were entire farm families out on the slopes cutting hay with sicles and raking it up by hand – incredibly hard work. We stopped for lunch at Stokyl Alm on a bowl under and impossible green peak between two valleys (seriously – the jagged peak was entirely green and looked like part of a leprechaun dream).

Hiked in Kuhtai Valley Again

kuhtai.png

Yesterday we hiked up the Nockspitz again. It´s a peak overlooking Innsbruck with a cross on top of it (crosses always make peaks better). Last time we were up there, there was a Sunday mass going on at the cross – this time there was no mass, but the Eidelweisse were out in full bloom.

This was the last hike we got to do with several of our friends who are regular hikers. We´re staying here until the end of the week, but many of them are leaving tomorrow. Our French school teacher friends, some American University professors, and a few others were all there to climb the peak for the last time this summer. One of our friends from last summer – Hubert – was back.
