Leaving Quito

We are leaving for the airport in 30 min to catch a plane to Lima, Peru. We had a quiet day just wandering the streets, window shopping, and we wrote some postcards. Not much else. It was nice to have some down time after the frenzied pace our guide Peter set for us in the Galapagos (but it does feel weird walking the streets and not having to look out for iguanas and sea lions). We both have a bit of “land sickness”from being on the boat for 10 days – it feels like the solid ground we are walking on is heaving under our feet like the swells under the boat. It’s pretty funny not being able to keep your balance when the ground stays still.

Will be arriving in Lima around 7:30pm, and tomorrow we head off to Puno, our jumping off point for Lake Titticaca.

Last Day in the Galapagos

We got to swim with sharks – several times! It was fantastic. We went for a deep water snorkel around Devils Crown, which is a sunken atoll off one of the larger islands here. The current was really strong, so when we jumped in the water out of the boat everyone took a second to adjust to the pull of the water. I was looking for sharks immediately, and I was not disappointed. As soon as we got in, I looked down and about 25 meters below me was either a black tip or a Galapagos shark gliding away from us along the bottom. I didn’t get a good enough look at it to positively identify it.

Tortoises

Today we were up for a 6:30 breakfast on board, and we were greeted by a loud, officious bull sea lion herding his harem at the side of our boat. It was pretty funny to watch how important he clearly felt he was.

Wow! What a few days we have had! We´ve swum with sea turtles the size of VW Bugs, played with sea lions in the ocean (or were they playing with us?), seen loads of sea iguanas, some land iguanas, black and white tip sharks, Galapagos penguins, magnificent frigate birds, blue foot boobies, nesting pelicans… in short, our trip has been everything we dreamed it could be so far, and it´s not over yet!

Tomorrow we are going to the Charles Darwin Conservation Center to see the giant land tortoise breeding center, and then we´re going to see them in the wild.

Galapagos!

We made it to the Galapagos Islands – so far its everything they promised: sea lions, blue footed boobies, marine iguanas, snorkeling – its everything you are told to expect and more. I can´t believe how much we have seen and we have only been here for an afternoon! We have to get back on our boat in 5 minutes – we´ll update this on Wednesday!
