Olomouc, Czech Republic

We are on our second day in Olomouc, a very quiet and quaint town in Eastern Czech Republic. The difference between here and Prague is quite dramatic; there are no other English speaking tourists, prices are very cheap here, and you don’t have to pay to enter any of the churches. A few interesting things about this town: it has its own pro soccer team, you can eat pizza for supper in the basement of the town hall, it has quite an assortment of mythology themed fountains, it has the second oldest university in the Czech Republic (it has teaching, phys. ed., science & theology faculties), it has its own castle and cathedral (where an 11 year old Mozart wrote his Symphony in F Major), and the hero of the Czech Republic – King Wencelas – is buried here. It’s the ancient capital of Moravia, and a fantastic place to soak in a lot of culture with very little effort.
Wondering The Streets

We were woken up to Indian Sitar music at 9:00am blasting through all the loud speakers at the B&B we are staying at. Apparently this is the call to breakfast. Today we wandered through the Jewish quarter of Prague and were amazed at the outrageous prices they wanted people to pay to see the sites (350 Kc each to see the Synagogues.) We also walked up to castle hill and took a look around.
In Prague

We’re in Prague. We landed in Frankfurt yesterday, and stopped long enough to have a bratwurst, catch our breath, have a sleep and get back on the train, We arrived here this afternoon after a 7 hour train ride from Frankfurt. Prague has changed a lot in the four years since we were here last. It’s much more Westernized – in another five years we won’t be able to afford it. I’m sure the Westernization is convenient for the locals but it diminishes the charm of the place for the tourists. We’ll be here for 3 nights, then we’re off to more Eastern destinations. We’ll write again when we know where we’ll be.
