Made it to San Jose

WeÅ•e going into major dog withdrawal… We left Sandie & Phineas with the Draper’s on Friday, and left for Thunder Bay on Saturday (07/07/07) – the most popular wedding day of the year. There were two weddings going on in the hotel we stayed at with the Gibbon’s, and the guests staying in the room beside us had two dogs in it. Hordes of little kids who were part of the wedding parties kept running by in the hall, yelling “woof!” at the door next to us, and the dogs were vigilant in their responses. It made us really want our doggies. That aside, we had a great time with our friends before we flew to Toronto and spent the night in the terminal because we’re too cheap to pay $169.00 a night for a room we would have to vacate at 3:30 am anyways. Sleeping in airports tip for Pearson International: Terminal 3, at the end of the check in desks by American airlines is very quite (compared to the rest of the terminal) and practically deserted. If you can get a bench to yourself, you’ve got it made (all things being relative).

Today we flew from Toronto to Charlotte, North Carolina (the terminal there has more shopping opportunities than most of the malls I’ve been in) and from Charlotte to San Jose, Costa Rica. Just to make things exciting right from the start, I’d forgotten to eat all day, and passed out in line at the passport control gate. It was deadly embarrassing, but everyone was very helpful – they took me to the first aid room in the airport, and took my blood pressure several times (60/90 – not too good). Between awkward translations from the Spanish phrasebook I had on me (Diarrhea?… no, no, I just need food…Constipated?…no, no, really, I just need to eat… Haemorrhoids? Okay buddy, I think you’re on the wrong page of that book now…) I was treated very well by everyone, and we got through passport control and immigration in the fast track – I got to go through in a wheelchair. The doctors here are hilariously by our standards – they very helpfully prescribed beans, fish and very hot coffee for my condition. Miraculously, our hotel pick-up was still waiting for us outside the airport, and we enjoyed a ride into town with a newly wed couple from Spain.

Now we have finally been fed, but we are still disgusting. We are going to have showers, a good night’s rest (thanks to the gravol I was given at the airport first aid station) and try to have a better start tomorrow.

Hello to all our friends, our families and our dogs – you can all laugh at our poor start on this trip!
