Sturdee Cove and Carden Cove

Today we drove down to Cardin Cove and walked the Voyageur Trail from Cardin Cove to Sturdy Cove beach and then up to the top on one of the many Lake Superior shore line hills. The beach at Cardin Cove was about 5 to 10m longer than last year due to the low water levels in Lake Superior and the water was a tropical aqua marine blue. I think Lake Superior will be know for some of the best beaches in the world if the lake keeps receding.

The main trails were remarkable well kept except for a small section at the beginning from Cardin Cove that used tree planks to keep hikers out of a swampy section. This section really needs to be board walked. Other than that someone has been maintaining the trail and removing the dead fallen trees from the winter. In fact the trail for the most part can be biked, as Scotty proved on our walk. The trail from Cardin Cove will take you to another small cove, have no idea what the name is, where we saw some ducks and people fishing. From here the trail branches to allow you to walk around the peninsula back to Cardin Cove or on ward to Sturdy Cove. The trail to Sturdy Cove was great, clear and well maintained. The beach at Sturdy Cove was amazing with its drift wood and sand. A great place to camp and get away from it all.

On the way back from Sturdy Cove we (Joe, Shelly, Scotty, Noel, and I) hiked to the top of a hill with a poorly maintained a trail to a picnic table at the top of it. We got lost on the way up as the trail was difficult to determine, but the views from the summit were amazing. You could see the coves we had just visited as well as the town of Marathon and as far to the west as Neys Provincial Park. We all took pictures and enjoyed the view before heading back down.

The hike took us about 3 hours and was well worth the effort. It would be nice if the town of Marathon would realize the vast potential of these trail to the local residents as well to potential tourists to the area and develop the many local trails.

Sturdy Cove happens to be my favorite place to camp. I`ve been going there for 20 years. I do not agree with bringing more tourists around Sturdy Cove as it is privatly owned and it would only destroy its beauty. It took years for the owners to clean it up and get it back to its natural beauty after they purchased it. Local residents use the cove along with a few of us that no longer live in the Thon……I think thats more than enough…..its perfect as is…..A beautiful HIDDEN Gem that needs to be kept that way. Sorry, thats just my opinion…..
