We are planning to travel to Central America this summer, traveling from San Jose, Costa Rica to Cancun, Mexico. The trip we are taking is through Gap Adventures and includes the following highlights:

Central American Map

  • Day 1 Arrive San José: Arrive in San José at any time.
  • Day 2-5 Costa Rica: Costa Rica is a must-see for the breathtaking flora and fauna. Travelling from cool highland cloud forest to rainforest gives a full spectrum of the country’s diverse natural highlights. Take time to bird watch, ride a horse, or try mountain biking. Soak up some pure mountain air before moving on to Nicaragua.
  • Day 6-11 Nicaragua: The Nicaragua of today is an adventure traveller’s dream with incredibly friendly people, natural beauty and untouched locations. Whether it’s wandering Granada’s charming colonial streets, hiking around an active volcano, soaking up the splendor of Ometepe Island or taking a day trip on the country’s famous lake, Nicaragua is unforgettable.
  • Day 12-15 Honduras: Explore the outstanding ruins of Copan, which has temples, pyramids and intricately carved stellae (statues) that predate many European civilizations. What is the perfect complement to Copan? How about Utila island – a snorkeling and diving mecca with a casual, relaxed atmosphere for those wanting to enjoy the beaches and beer.
  • Day 16-25 Guatemala: Antigua, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site, was once the seat of the Spanish colonial government and the most important city in all of Central America. From here, we have a chance to visit to the famous market of Chichicastenango. Meaning “sweet river” in Spanish, Rio Dulce is surrounded by dense jungle and lies on the banks of Lake Izabal. Our final stop in Guatemala is Flores, a picturesque town surrounded by Lake Petén Itzá.
  • Day 26-29 Belize: We cross the border but stay in the jungle for a little while longer, making our way to the Cayo area to explore the region’s lush vegetation and stunning caves. This is easily done from the town of San Ignacio. Belize is most famous for is barrier reef and laid-back Caribbean atmosphere, both of which are found on Caye Caulker, our next destination in the country.
  • Day 30-31 Mexico: Located about an hour south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is a small oceanside town with a big reputation on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. Spend your time snorkelling among the mangroves, parasailing, relaxing on the beach or take an optional visit to Tulúm, the marvelous beachside Mayan ruins.
  • Day 32 Depart Cancun
