Last Day in Austria…

We have hiked for 11 days straight in the rain, and now that the sun has come out, it is time to leave… oh well, we enjoyed ourselves anyways. We did get to see a herd of wild mountain goats for the first time in the 14 years we have been hiking here – that was pretty exciting. It was lots of fun to stand very still on the mountains and watch them as they watched us – they are very skittish, so they are rare to see. We were lucky enough to have some fantastic hiking guides, and some great company on our last few hikes in the Alps. Of course, the best part is arriving at the mountain huts for the food – there’s something about traditional Tiroler food that gives you a great sense of comfort, especially on cold rainy days. Many of our friends from France are quite happy to sit and discuss the intricacies of fine food and good meals in the same way that Canadians sit and talk about the weather. It was a lot more fun to discuss where to find the best chocolate in Paris than it would have been to discuss how wet we were and how rainy and cloudy it was outside. Of course what we mean by “cloudy” is the cloud you walked through at the altitude you hiked at to get to the hut.

We are in Salzburg now, taking a liesurly day to prepare ourselves for the forthcoming chaos at the airport tomorrow. The international airport security alerts will no doubt be inconvenient, but they should ensure decent security. It will be a long day getting back to Glasgow tomorrow. The big issue is that absolutely no carry on baggage is allowed, so we had to go out and buy a special Pelican – type camera case so we can check the cameras with some hope of them not being destroyed. It was an expense we could have done without, and the baggage restrictions also put a big cramp in our souvenir and gift purchase plans. We actually had to mail home a bunch of gear that we will not need for quite a while to make room for the things you can not carry on the plane now – the postage was another expense we could have done without. Oh well, there’s no sense in getting all upset about being secure (we hope).
Well, our room at the hostel we are currently at is almost ready, so it’s time to check in and go out to explore the city (by the way, this is a great hostel if you’re ever coming to Salzburg – “Jugend & Familiengasthaus” located on 18 Josef Preis Allee)
As usual, we miss our families, friends and doggies…
See you all soon,
Noel & George
