Raining in Innsbruck

Hey!

The weather we were told to expect in Scotland did not catch up with us until we reached Innsbruck. It has been raining for 6 days straight, and we’re a little water logged, as we have been hiking every day regardless. We are very happy to have landed here at the same time as so many of our hiking friends…Isabelle, Eric, Pascalle, Vera, Patrick… we have yet to see Anne, Peter, Dean, Catherine and Petra, and of course we all are feeling the loss of Gordon this year.

The hikes have been fairly tame, and we have done few new routes, but the weather has dictated a cautious approach. It is still beautiful here, but the beauty only reveals itself fleetingly from behind the clouds as we are allowed a glimpse of snow capped mountain peaks, falling water, the occasional glacier cap, and when we’re fortunate a valley from the heights we have hiked to.

Today we were in the Kuhtai Valley, and the Alpine horses were grazing all over the mountains. They were soaked by the relentless rain as we were, and they approached us for a nuzzling and some attention. It was amazing to see these gentle creatures materialize out of the fog (actually, we were in a cloud at 2100 m above sea level) and nudge us for a pat. They are built like Shetland ponies – shorter than your average horse, with the remnants of a winter coat, and beautiful gray colouring.

Tomorrow we are considering taking a day off from hiking, to allow our boots to dry out properly, and perhaps do some shopping to replace the part of our wardrobe that George turned gray and shrunk in Glasgow – it’s hard to keep hiking in a limited, wet wardrobe. I’m off to the pool for a swim now – when you’re wet, you’re wet, so I may as well carry on…

As usual, we miss our families, friends and doggies…

Noel & George
