Finally in Innsbruck

After two days of travel to get here, we have arrived. We spent the day in London yesterday, just bumming around the markets and fashionable streets before taking off to Salzburg.
We experienced a funny incident in the airport, with “que jumpers” – much disdained by the British public. Two people, loaded with bags from Harrod’s, and obviously very self – important insisted on crowding us and the entire line ahead of us, and finally jumped the que on boarding call at the airport in London. The crowd essentially rallied against them, and told them that there behavior was entirely inappropriate, but they insisted on their right to step on everyone else’s rights, and verbally abused the crowd as they insisted on taking their place ahead of many people. Strangely enough, we all arrived in Salzburg at the same time! It was a bit of a cultural experience to see the people say something to the que jumpers, and another entirely different experience to watch two adults in action who were confident of their superiority and rights over everyone else there. I guess we travel to learn…
We spent the night in Salzburg, and took the train to Innsbruck this morning. It feels like being home for us. There is something markedly different about the landscapes of Austria and Scotland – the balding, rounded, russet mountain tops of Scotland invite a play of light on them that is beautiful in a way that can make you melancholy and break your heart. The sharp, stoney, snowy mountains of Austria are beautiful in a way that alternately lifts your spirits in awe, or potentially strikes fear in your heart (especially if you’re on one in a storm).
We’re looking forward to getting on the mountains tomorrow – today we have a goof-off schedule to stick to!
P.S. Thanks for the messages Kelly!
