Last Day Fort William

We did a lot of sightseeing & preparations today. I managed to get a swim in at the local recreation center – I was foolish enough to try the door at 7:10 AM, when one of the regulars was standing beside it, only to be met with the comment ‘Do you think I’d be standing here if it was open?’ It reminded me of my Grandpa.

Other than that, we saw the Jacobite Steam Train (ie: the Harry Potter train) and took lots of pictures of it as it pulled out of the train station. It was really neat to get in it’s engine and see how the coal-fired engine worked – wow, it was hot in there. I did get a picture of the conductor in the engine.

We also visited the Highland Museum, and were given a brief but concise history of the region, without all of the melodramatics so often associated with the Jacobite uprising of 1746 and the Battle of Culloden. Even better, a great little dog greets people as they arrive in the museum…

We went for a ‘warm up hike’ in the Crofter’s Woods this afternoon. Our very knowledgeable guide gave us the history of the area, the uses of several of the plants in the woods, and an explanation of the changing industries over time in the area. It was an afternoon well spent.

All in all, we’re a little tired and ready for supper then bed. We don’t know if we’ll be able to write over the next 5 – 6 days, as we will be hiking the Great Glen. Wish us luck…
