Glasgow School of Art

We were out all last night at a pub called Uisge Beatha, talking to the locals about everything from politics to travel to World Cup Games (England plays tonight, so the place should be out of control…).We were woken up this morning to the sound of pipes and drums – the Orange Marchers were making their way through town. It was a great way to be woken up in Scotland, but it would seem the local authorities are anticipating some trouble, as there’s a significant police presence everywhere, and the TV news helicopters followed the marchers throughout their entire route (it lasted for easily 2 1/2 hours). We did get some pictures of the drummers, pipers (tin, not bag), and accordion players.

This afternoon I dragged George down to the Cathedral district to see the Glasgow Cathedral (St. Mungo’s Cathedral). It was well worth it, the graveyard alone is worth half a day of exploration just to read the ancient headstones. We will go back again tomorrow to take a longer look, as we had to leave on time to make it to our booked tour of the Rennie MacIntosh Glasgow School of Art.

The School of Art is well worth the effort to go to. The guided tour gave the history of the building, explained the amazing art deco architectural details, and allowed us to see some of the graduate student’s work (they just had their graduate show last night). The furniture, the library, the stairwells and the classrooms all demonstrated MacIntosh’s incredible attention to architectural detail, and his insistence on using nature as inspiration for artistic forms.

George spent some time researching his whiskeys and has made notes on what he wants to buy before we leave. I’m not hauling big bloody heavy whiskey bottles along on a hike. So far he’s decided on a Ledaig cask filled, an Oban 14 year old, and any Ardbeg from the 1970′s distilling. This part of today’s dispatch is for Jack… Did you get those notes Jack?

Other than that, we’ve spent some time window shopping and relaxing. We’re still trying to get our heads on straight after two days of flying.

Okay, this is getting boring to read … sorry, I’m rambling. That’s all for now.

Noel & George.
