In Edinburgh

We’ve been in Edinburgh for 2 1/2 days now, and we count ourselves lucky that today is the first day of rain we’ve seen, as we were warned by many Scottish friends to “bring your waterproofs” before we left. The weather is damp, but much warmer than home at this time of year. (there’s the weather update for all our Canadian friends – weather tracking is a Canadian sport…)

So far we’ve been up and down Princes Street, walked the Royal Mile, visited the Castle, Hollyrood Palace and St. Giles Kirk. It doesn’t sound like much, but we’ve been filling in the in-between times with little excursions into shops, stopping for tea or hot chocolate and eating various Scottish grain-foods (Scotch broth, oat cakes, etc…) No haggis yet (but we did find a Haggis Express) – we’ll bring some back for anyone who wants it though, as you can buy it in a can here to take home. Let us know if you want some quickly – get your order in first!
Everywhere you go here, you’re faced with long memories for family and clan history. It’s a force that sweeps up every resident and visitor to this city – the need to trace the origins of your family, your clan, the building you’re in, the ground you’re walking on… It will all be related to incidents, events and tragedies that happened before Canada was even a country, with a vividness of description that would lead you to believe the person relating the story to you was personally involved.
On a lighter note, we’ve got tickets to go see the theater production of “My Fair Lady” at this afternoon’s matinée. When we woke up to the sound of rain on the window this morning, we thought it would be best to find something to do inside today – so this is it! We can always go to the Scotch Distillery Museum tomorrow (I feel obligated to go after reading Ian Bank’s book “Raw Spirit”). Tonight we’ll bundle up and head off to “The Night Afore” festivities in the rain. I’m afraid we’ll be short on pictures, due to the weather, but we’ll have stories to tell…
As usual, we miss our friends, families and doggies…
Noel & George
