Back In Lima

Hey!
We’re back from the Amazon Jungle. We really lucked out with the weather – it was relatively cool and we got to see a decent cross section of wild life – black cayman, toucans, parrots, budgies, monkeys, piranhas, squirrels the size of the foxes in Marathon, industrious leaf cutter ants, and an enormous friendly spider that hung out on our bathroom curtain (our guide thinks it was a wolf spider).
The lodge we stayed in was amazing – the whole place was open concept. All of the rooms were made of rattan walls and thatched roofs with a wall open onto the jungle, and hammocks to swing in. The sleeping accommodation was separate from the common areas and dining room, and all lodge areas were linked by teak deck walkways. The jungle is literally at your doorstep (as are all the other guests, as rattan walls don’t do much for sound proofing the less appealing sounds of humans in the morning – after 20 days together the honeymoon is over, and there are no secrets left…)
We were supposed to fly directly to Lima yesterday when we left the lodge, but this being South America, things do not go as planned so we were sort of marooned in Cusco last night, and ended up staying in the “Killa Hostel”, which may have ben more appropriately named the “Kill – U” hostel, as the electric wiring went straight through the shower heads, I’m pretty sure the toilets were electrified (don’t sit on them!), and Stuart and Peter got locked in their room and had to be broken out by some guy from California… George and I had a TV in our room, but I think it was wired through the bathroom too, I told him to stand out in the hall to use the remote, in case the TV blew up when he turned it on! All was made better by a great supper at a restaurant called the Witches Garden, owned by a Canadian ex-pat.
We’re finally in Lima, and off on a city tour this afternoon. We’ll update you tomorrow – we’re off to find a decent coffee. Believe it or not, it’s very hard to find in South America.
