At The Markets

We spent today wandering various markets in valleys between enormous volcanoes. The market at Otavalo is a Indigenous handicraft market full of textiles, jewelry, and woolen sweaters. It is the biggest craft market in Ecuador, and it was interesting to wander around the goods and people. We didn’t buy anything, but we took lots of pictures of the people.

Further down the valley, there was a leather goods market that had some beautifully crafted bags, coats, hats and saddles. The saddles reminded me of my grandpa – I wish he could have been here to see them.

We also visited lakes in dormant volcanic craters, and stopped for a tourist picture of ourselves straddling the Equator.

This sounds really dry, but we had a great day – we are just very tired. We descended 1200m into the valley, and climbed 1500m back up – in the van…

Tomorrow we take off for the Galapagos islands – we don’t know if we will be able to email from there, so this may be the last message you get from us for a week. Don’t be afraid to write back!
