Arrived In Frankfurt

We´re in Frankfurt at the gambling saloon in the train station writing email. It stinks like cigarette smoke in here. We´re staying at a little pension run by Oriental immigrants who don´t speak German or English, but we can communicate anyways. It´s a great day to just sit in cafes and drink coffee and watch the world go by – you really have no other choice on Sunday in Europe – they still close everything down here. It´s a nice change of pace from North America – you have no choice but to relax.

Yesterday we went on our last hike in Innsbruck. We were up at the Sulzenau Hutte again – the one that takes us through the forest to a mountain valley plateau, then switchbacks up a rock face to the foot of a glacier. It was a good day to gain some altitude and get out of the heat.

We met some new people and made new friends on this hike. There was an elderly Italian lady who looked like her head was going to blow off half way up the forest route – I noticed she had heart medication in her bag on the way back down after lunch. Thank God we didn´t have to carry her down the mountain, but we did see the mountain rescue helicopter practicing rescues over a section of the route with waterfalls. We met a Canadian who lives in Sicily and is the manager of an English language school there. We shared several travel stories and laughs with him. We also said goodbye to the last of our university professor friends – we were all complaining about having to leave the idealic life we´ve been leading in Innsbruck, and having to go back to school.

Regardless, we miss our home, friends and dogs, and although the vacation has been great, it will be great to be home soon…
