We are in Lubljana, a city that was billed as an undiscovered Prague. It is a very small city (pop 330 000) that is very easy to walk in, and find your way around. However, it does not feel like Prague. The streets are much more narrow, and the height of the average building (5 floors) seems designed to keep the sun off the streets, so it is a little claustrophobic, but it is nice to have some shade in the heat. It is a very green city with a beautiful split canal running through it. The whole downtown area circles the base of a hill that holds a huge castle. Everyone here speaks English, and the locals are very friendly. There are few tourists here.
We are staying in a hostel that was a former cold war prison that held political dissidents. It has been converted over the span of 10 years into the hostel it currently is, and it is run by the local university student body and Amnesty Internation. It is interesting to talk to the students who recall some memories of what it was like to be 15 years old at the time of the independence revolution. They were very interested in our Yugoslav VISAs in our passports, and very curious about Canada. George had fun trying to explain what a moose was to them. I still do not think they understand.

We are off to explore the castle and the old Franciscan Church this afternoon (the Franciscans kicked the Catholics out in the 1300s, this town has survived the Black Plague, and invasions by everyone from the Romans, the Turks, Nazi Germany and finally Communism. The locals are very proud of their new found status as a country, and give all kinds of advice on what to see and where to go.
We are off to Venice tomorrow at 4:00. We will get there at 11:30 tomorrow night. Now, we are off to lunch. Take care…
