Last Night In Zakopane (Poland)

We’re off to the Slovak Republic tomorrow. We’re booked into a hotel in a small mountain town called Staery Smokovic (sp ?). It seems like there’s all kinds of fun things to do there – castles to visit, caves with stalactites to explore, and lots of trails to hike.

We went for a hike today – we never got above the level of the sheep (that’s a mark of pride when you’re hiking in Innsbruck – if you climb higher than the local livestock you can consider yourself a mountaineer). We took the funicular (Cog Railway Car) up to the top of the ski hill. It was raining, so it was best to stay on stable ground – you can’t get lost if you can see the town because you’re below the clouds.

We visited the local wooden church & its accompanying graveyard today. The church means a lot to the locals – it’s constructed entirely out of wood, and ornately carved in the local style. The graveyard was something else – the gravestones were actually moss covered boulders over the graves, and the headstones were not stones at all, but beautifully carved wooden crosses, crucifixes, and nativity scenes. They were set in an old growth forested area, and huge trees grew up throughout the graveyard, making it seem like the headstones were just another part of the forest. It was a surprisingly beautiful and peaceful place.

Thanks to everyone who is keeping in touch with us – Paul, it sounds like you’re having a blast (ha!); Rob – thanks for the dog update; Mom & dad – thanks for the random thoughts!

We’ll see if we can write you all from Slovakia…
