London: Day 6

Today was almost a complete write 0ff, if not for 2 or 3 redeeming factors. We slept in, missed breakfast and got off to a late start to the British Museum. We stopped and had cappuccino and Starbucks (it’s hard to get real coffee in London).

We spent the morning wandering the museum. We saw the Rosetta Stone, apparently it’s the key to translating hieroglyphs into modern Egyptian, who knew? It also contains an entire, huge Lycean tomb, apparently it was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. It also contains all the freezes off the Parthenon in Athens, it’s amazing. I can’t believe that the British pilfered treasures from countries all over the world.

After that we got tired and frustrated looking for something/somewhere to eat. We ended up in Borders book store coffee shop. That was okay though, because Geo got to buy some more cyberpunk books.

After lunch, thing’s fell apart completely. We were supposed to go to the Tate Modern Art galley, and we ended up, separated and lost for about an hour. By the time I found Geo in front of Paperchase I was completely frazzled and new hysterics.

We both settled down and I found the home decor/furniture block of town, and we wandered through those stores for a while (remember Goodge St. tube) There was lots of great stuff, but we were both to frazzled and emotionally exhausted to seriously consider buying anything.

We went back to the hotel and had a snooze, then went out for supper near the theater. We found another Crockpot restaurant, so the food was fairly cheap.

The show Mama Mia! was really funny. I really enjoyed the way they used the songs to narrate the story, and the sets and lighting were really simple, but highly effective. I loved the dancing, it was simple, but well choreographed, and the grand finally of 3 songs, Mama Mia, Dancing Queen and Under Attack. The spandex costumes were hilarious. It was a real feel good show.

We left the theater in great spirits and found some of the theaters with other plays that I want to see, The Reduced Shakespeare Company and Fosse! We’ll see about tickets tomorrow.

We took the tube back to the hotel and picked up some snacks from the “All Mens K-Bab Shop” (as we’ve dubbed it) on the corner of our street, and called it an early night. I’m off to bed.
